Walled Garden Volunteers' Blog June 2026
/A brief report this time – we have been rather busy in the walled garden!
The weather in late May turned horribly hot, 30 or 31C, and the gardeners’ conversation was all about planting for drought conditions, watering, porous hoses….
The irises were over and now the lupins looked wonderful in the sunshine along with a fabulous show of peonies (pictured).
And then- the temperature dropped again, and it rained! Our plants have loved the conditions… a visit to the garden now, in mid -June, shows exuberant growth throughout the borders.
Unfortunately, the weeds are also enjoying themselves! Helen is pictured having tackled a mass of Cleavers.
There’s a lot of work going on in the vegetable and herbs section, beyond the pond.
Sarah was busy at home growing vegetable seedlings, which made a slow start with the drop in temperatures. Now, though, the plants have arrived and are doing well at the pergola and in the raised beds. Today we’ve picked strawberries, broad beans, lettuces and radishes - with a whole host of seedlings packed into boot of car (pictured below). The new blueberry bushes are looking promising, too… (pictured below) and we’ve cut down Comfrey and added it to the compost bay (pictured below).
The meadow is in its ‘white phase’ now, ox-eye daisies filling the space. It’s wonderful to see how the colours change as one wildflower after another has its moment through the seasons.
And the bees, as busy as us, are captured here in these photos by Philippa, loving our garden and feasting on our flowers. On the left visiting a Phlomis and on the right a Stachys.
