Walled Garden Volunteers' Blog December 2025

Season’s Greetings! And a last peek behind the scenes, as we finish preparing for Winter. There’s been plenty going on.

We think that this has been the toughest year we’ve ever had in the Garden. If you’ve been reading our Blog, you’ll know the challenges we’ve had in 2025 with rain, then drought, then an abundance of fruit and seedlings …and weeds, and leaves...

Happily, the cardoons (pictured above) are still standing despite gusty winds and rain…

So, recently the gardeners have been working very hard to bring back some order to the borders. Here, the meadow ‘circles’ are being weeded under the fruit trees; and gradually, the garden is taking on its tidy, winter look. Even Compost Corner has had a makeover!

We’ve planted bulbs in the front courtyard, and the iris border looks smart, too. However, there’s still quite a lot to do! Seedlings and ‘squish’ are on the pre-Christmas list:

Nature seems to have been testing us all year. And as we’ve raced to get our spring bulbs into the ground, we discover that some snowdrops have decided it’s already time to flower! Well in advance of our annual snowdrop celebration at the end of January!

‘Ah, well’, as wise, experienced gardening friends will tell us, with a shrug and a smile,

‘That’s gardening for you!’.

We’ll be working through January, while the Museum is closed – and all shall be ready when we welcome you back with our Snowdrop Celebration 2026.

Happy Christmas, All, and we’ll look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Best wishes,

The MiP Walled Garden Volunteers.
