This document is a transcript of a travel journal written by Sidney Thornton in 1872.
Sidney was a grocer in Stroud and it was unusual at the time for someone of his class to embark on such a journey. He and his wife of 20 years, Ann, left their eight children with a nursemaid and servant while they went away with their friends, Mr and Mrs Morgan, to Switzerland for the Summer.
The journal details every aspect of their journey, from times travelled to the costs of meals, and bed and board at the various guest houses, and the special treatment afforded to English travellers at some destinations.
Spelling errors, and names of places mentioned have remained as they are in the original, and only minor alterations have been made to the text.
Thanks to Bill Jones for the illustrations.
