  • Traditional hand shears and samples of fleece from different breeds of sheep to enable your group to explore where the raw material for woollen cloth comes from.

  • Drop spindles and carders so you can discuss how wool was processed for weaving.

  • Old fashioned wooden shuttle and bobbins to enable your group to aid discussion of how woollen cloth was woven on looms.

  • Selection of natural materials used to dye fabric to allow exploration of how woollen cloth was dyed.

  • A1 print of the painting View of Wallbridge, Stroud (Museum number: 1948.500). Using this painting from around 1790 and the accompanying notes, your group can discover the visual information it shows us about the wool industry in Stroud town.

  • Designed to support the curriculum and offer opportunities for children to handle, investigate and learn using objects, this themed loan and accompanying activities have been created by our skilled learning professionals and expert curators to help teachers bring a museum experience into the classroom.
