Talk with Heiner Zimmermann: Grave Markers – A Frontier for Blacksmiths?

  • The Museum in the Park Stratford Park, Stratford Road Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, GL5 4AF United Kingdom (map)

We think only of grave ‘stones’ here because so many memorial markers in the UK are usually considered to be stone. Why? In Europe forged grave markers are common, and historically grave markers in the UK were made of a variety of materials, including iron and bronze. During the Victorian period iron and bronze were very popular materials (especially white bronze). Forged grave markers is not currently an active market in the UK so Heiner’s challenge is to explore how blacksmiths, with their unique skills, might re-enter this space. He proposes that there are compelling reasons to consider this, and will show numerous examples of good practice to discuss.

Heiner’s journey as a young smith included working in Alan’s forge at Whiteway. Now he is an internationally respected artist and teacher, admired by many established British and European smiths for his design skills. He is Professor of Metal Art at the University of Gothenburg. He aims to keep his presentation ‘engaging, thought-provoking and challenging’ and invites you to join him.

Tickets £10, booking required. Book online or call 01453 763394.
