Same Sea, Different Boat

A collaborative project which celebrates creativity in a time of crisis

Exhibition in Gallery One, Saturday 10 September - Sunday 9 October 2022

‘Same Sea, Different Boat’ is a global quilt project consisting of collagraph printed and stitched stories. Over 600 artists positively describe their experience of the pandemic by creating a collagraph plate printed onto fabric embellishing these prints with stitch. These small narratives have been joined together by Sue Brown, Catherine Kingzett, Liske Johnson and Louise Asher to make a large social documenting quilt made up of 7 panels. We were all experiencing the same pandemic, but all in very different ways. We were … and are … all in the Same Sea, but not in the Same Boat.

Some of the first quilts were shown at the Museum during Autumn 2020. We are pleased to see the full collection return and hope you enjoy the detail and beauty of the many hundreds of printed and stitched visual stories. Perhaps you are one of the artists and can point out your square to us?

Lockdown Rainbows

As you enter the gallery where ‘Same Sea, Different Boat’ is displayed you'll be greeted by a giant rainbow comprising many different rainbows and messages of hope. During the height of the Coronavirus Pandemic people painted, coloured and otherwise created rainbow artworks to demonstrate hope, support for key workers, and to connect with the outside world during a period of lockdown. Following the end of the lockdowns, many of these artworks were donated to the museum and we are pleased to present a selection of them here. We’d love to hear from you if your artwork is featured!
