Join us in the Courtyard for the singing of George Ridler’s Oven, an ancient Gloucestershire folk song once suspected of being the secret coded message of Royalists at the end of the English Civil War.

Richard Chidlaw and friends will lead a rendition of George Ridler’s Oven to mark his gift to the museum of a cider jar by Peter Currell Brown. Song sheets provided, just bring your voices.

The George Ridler’s Oven cider jar was commissioned as a leaving gift for Brian Hayward, English teacher at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s Grammar School and an expert on mummers and wassailing. On his death he bequeathed the jar to Richard Chidlaw, who now passes it to the Museum in the Park to join its notable collection of Peter Currell Brown pottery.
