Unlock the beauty of Japanese textile art with a creative workshop exploring traditional Sashiko repair stitching with textile designer and Stroud School of Art tutor Lichen Davenport. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned crafter, this workshop will introduce you to the techniques and philosophy behind this centuries-old craft, while exploring how repair and reuse can help reduce textile waste. Inspired by Lichen’s work in the Stroud School of Art staff show, you will also have the opportunity to hear more about her textile practice and see the work that informs the workshop.
During the day, you will be introduced to the hand-stitch methods of Japanese mending using a range of beautiful stitch patterns, traditional motifs and fabrics. You will be guided through a selection of designs to choose from, which can later be developed into further projects or used to repair and transform your own worn or damaged clothes, giving them a new purpose whilst helping to reduce textile waste.
All materials will be provided, and you will also take home a small sewing pack so you can continue feeling inspired and confident to repair and rejuvenate your favourite textile pieces at home.
