To accompany our exhibition of the work of artist-blacksmith Alan Evans, this display will explore the creativity of his unconventional upbringing at the Whiteway Colony near Miserden, Gloucestershire.
Founded in 1898, Whiteway was envisioned as a self-sufficient community which renounced individual ownership. Among the communists, anarchists, pacifists and vegetarians who lived at Whiteway were many talented artists and craftspeople including Alan’s parents, Peter and Joy Evans. This display from the Evans family’s collection showcases textiles and leatherwork made by colonists, alongside photographs and papers which tell the story of their way of life.
