Our beautiful Walled Garden

Summer Events in the Walled Garden and Stratford Park

Enjoy the lovely summer weather in our beautiful outdoor spaces with these fantastic events.

Summer Poetry Evening

Thursday 12 July | 7:30pm | Free

Jeff Cloves reads from his new book, Once Weekly, which will be available at £5.

Jeff says that he has never been a prolific writer, so when a friend challenged him to write a poem a week for a year, he was apprehensive.  Now here they are, unedited and printed in the order they were written.  The first arrived on November 15th 2016 and not one week was missed in 52.

As the poems were prepared  for print Jeff was taken aback to see how often his grandparents, his mum and dad, his children, his family cats even, appeared among memories, stories, and dreams. So this little book has turned out to be part biography, part autobiography, part journal. It's also part diary: a response to the seasons, to national news, to the universal pop arts of sport, film, and music.

Come along and enjoy! Free entry, books and drinks available to buy.

Jenny Wren Productions present: Emma

Saturday 28 July | 7:30pm | £12/£10/£8

Adapted by Martin Millar and Doon MacKichan

Jenny Wren Productions delve into the dating scene of the early 19th century in this playful adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel. Emma constantly tries to pair off her unfortunate friend Harriet Smith with unsuitable men but is convinced that, for herself, the single life is the only way. Matches are made and unmade quicker than you can say "how delightful", but after all the outrageous flirting, declarations of love and heaving of bosoms, will Emma's heart escape unscathed?

As Jane Austen writes, members of her family become her characters; blushing heroines, dashing suitors and dastardly cads and many more, bringing her story of the ultimate matchmaker to mischievous life.

From the company that brought you Twelfth Night, Robin Hood and last year's Jungle Book, make a date this summer with Jenny Wren Productions out of doors in the beautiful Walled Garden. Gates open at 6.30pm.

Please bring blankets or low-backed chairs.

"How very happy a summer must lie before us..."
