Cathedral of Cloth: Life and Times at Ebley Mill

In 2018 Ebley Mill celebrates the building of the Long Block at Ebley 200 years ago. The story of the mill reaches back to the early 1400s; it was owned by a fashionable man about town before Samuel Marling made it into the powerhouse of the Stroud Valleys. The finest cloth for Victorian gentlemen was made there, but also materials for 1960s so called "dolly birds" (fashion models) and racing car drivers.

This fascinating exhibition reveals the stories of the famous people and the ordinary workers connectedto the mill and includes many rarely seen items.

Presented by Stroudwater Textile Trust in partnership with the Museum in the Park.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

For 200 years Ebley Mill has had a notable impact on its surroundings and the people of Stroud, before its closure as a textile mill in 1982. This talk recalls some of the long forgotten workpeople involved, the mill’s working conditions, the camaraderie and the dangers.

WEA Day School: The Human Story with tutor Greg Morter

In this examination of the broad sweep and patterns of human history we will be asking, and trying to answer, some very big questions. Why, for example, did our ancestors survive when our cousins the Neanderthals became extinct? Why were plants domesticated in some places but not others?  Why did many places in different parts of the world experience very similar processes of urbanisation, centralisation of power and empire building? And why, in the nineteenth century, did Britain become the dominant global power rather than, say, China?
